Notice CP2501
Your return may not match what was reported
An early, softer version of the CP2000. The IRS found a possible mismatch and is asking you to explain before it proposes any change.
What it means
The information returns the IRS received don't line up with your return. Unlike a CP2000, this letter doesn't calculate new tax yet. It's the IRS asking whether there's an explanation.
What to do
- Check the listed items against your records.
- If your return was right, send a short explanation with copies of documents.
- If you left something out, follow the letter's instructions. It may ask you to file an amended return (Form 1040-X).
Don't
- Don't wait. If you don't answer, the next letter is usually a CP2000 with proposed tax.

Is it really from the IRS?
The IRS starts contact by mail. A real notice has a notice number and your tax year, and you can see it, with any balance, in your IRS online account. The IRS never demands payment by gift card, crypto or wire transfer, and never threatens arrest. If in doubt, call the IRS using a number from IRS.gov, not one from the letter.
The law behind it
Free help
The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent part of the IRS that helps when a problem isn't being resolved (Form 911, or 877-777-4778). Low Income Taxpayer Clinics represent people for free or a small fee, many in Spanish and other languages.
