When it's dueApril 15, 2027, with an automatic extension to October 15.

What it is

Lists each foreign bank, brokerage and similar account and its highest balance. It's filed with FinCEN, part of the Treasury, online through the BSA E-Filing System, not with your tax return.

Who it's for

US persons (citizens, residents and US companies) whose foreign accounts together topped $10,000 at any time during the year.

Good to know

  • The $10,000 test is the total of all accounts combined, at their highest points.
  • Accounts you can sign on, like an employer's or a parent's, can count too.
  • Non-willful penalties can reach about $16,000 per year; willful ones are far higher.
