Form W-9
Giving your taxpayer ID to someone who pays you
What it is
Certifies your name, tax status and Social Security number or EIN so the payer can send you a 1099. Without it, the payer may have to withhold 24% (backup withholding).
Who it's for
US persons, including US citizens, residents and US companies, when a client, bank or platform asks.
Good to know
- A single-member LLC lists the owner's name and number unless it has elected to be a corporation.
- Foreign persons give a W-8 form instead, never a W-9.
